It Begins: Texas National Guard deployed to Illinois
The Pentagon confirmed 200 Texas National Guard troops arrived in Illinois [ [link removed] ] on Tuesday for an initial 60-day period to “protect federal functions, personnel, and property” amid anti-immigration protests, with deployments following incidents where federal agents were rammed and boxed in by vehicles near an ICE facility in Broadview.
Local officials oppose deployment: Illinois Gov. Tom Cotton proposes bill to punish transgender criminals the same as any other criminal
Senator Tom Cotton proposed legislation to bar federal judges from using gender identity as a reason to reduce criminal sentences [ [link removed] ], stating “Criminals are criminals” and judges shouldn’t use “gender confusion” to assign shorter sentences.
Kavanaugh assassination plot case prompted bill: The legislation follows a Biden-appointed judge sentencing Nicholas Roske to only 8 years in prison for plotting to kill Justice Brett Kavanaugh—22 years below the 30-year federal minimum—with much of the 7-hour sentencing hearing focused on how Roske’s transgender identity warranted leniency.
Companion prison housing bill: Cotton also introduced the “Preventing Violence Against Female Inmates Act” to mandate biological sex-based prison housing and block federal grants to states that place men in women’s prisons, codifying Trump’s executive order while citing safety concerns about placing male prisoners, including those identifying as women, with female inmates.
