Email from Citizens for Traditional Values State Board of Education View in Browser   URGENT deadline for Friday, October 10: see details below, and speak up for the children of our state. Thank you.   Michigan, we must protect the innocence of our children before it's too late Before I share the urgent information with you about the latest developments happening at the Michigan State Board of Education - this month, I need you to keep in mind one thing: Not every child has an advocate or a champion. YOUR VOICE may be the most crucial thing to impact whether their future knows innocence or destruction. THEY NEED YOU TO TAKE THE FOLLOWING SERIOUSLY. As responsible citizens who care for the upbringing of our children, we must remember that while OUR children may not be in systems that will be impacted by the following, for many children this is their only option. And their parents may not be at a place to even use their voice. In the hustle and bustle of life, I cannot implore you enough: Take 10 min to submit emails Share with a few friends and encourage them to do the same AND PRAY that this egregious agenda would be stopped Thank you. A Positive Voice for Your Values, Eileen McNeil, President   Michigan State Board of Education Proposed Health Standards Will Silence Parents and Steal Children’s Innocence Brief Background: Currently Michigan public schools’ health standards for Sex-Ed curriculum INCLUDES a provision to allow parents the right to make the decision whether their child takes the class or not. Public schools require all students to take a health class for graduation. This is separate from Sex-Ed curriculum. The health class curriculum covers things such as healthy eating habits, sleeping habits, the benefits of physical activity, mental and emotional health, healthy relationships, time management, etc. Regarding Sex-Ed, Michigan legislators passed a law in 2004 to protect parents’ rights and specifically made it elective and not a requirement for graduation. The law protects parents' rights to opt-out their children from the class, if desired. In addition, they provided a safeguard that IF a school was to teach Sex-Ed, it would require an advisory board that included local clergy, parents and members of the community on it.   The Michigan State Board of Education (SBOE) is in current negotiations to change this: They want Sex-Ed curriculum to become a required part of health education in Michigan public schools. This not only violates the current law that keeps Sex-Ed classes separate, but it also eliminates a parent right to opt-out their child. Why? Because Health Class – would then include Sex-Ed - is required for graduation. This proposal will silence the voices of parents, clergy and community members. It will also remove transparency. They also want to add a requirement to teach gender and sexual identity, which has never been a part of the Sex-Ed curriculum. What happens if the Michigan State Board of Education adopts this? They side-step transparency laws by reclassifying “sex education” as “health education”. It will bypass certain laws that require parents to be notified. Your children will be required to learn values about sexuality and gender that directly contradict the sincerely held religious beliefs of your family AND, You will not be able to opt your child out of this curriculum. Because Health Classes do not require an advisory board, this proposal will, in effect, silence input from the clergy, parents and the community.
