Upcoming events at the Adam Smith Institute

As we head into the bank holiday weekend...

We thought we'd let you know about three exciting upcoming events at the Adam Smith Institute:

TNG with Norman Lamb

Following the summer break, the Adam Smith Institute will open its doors to 18-30 year olds once again on 3rd September to enjoy some policy chat over a few glasses of wine.

This September we are delighted to once again welcome the Rt Hon Norman Lamb MP to ASI HQ. Norman has been the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk since 2001. As Health Minister in the Coalition Government, Norman worked to reform the care system and led the drive to integrate health and social care. He also challenged the NHS to ensure that mental health was treated with the same priority as physical health. He was elected Chair of the Science & Technology Select Committee in July 2017, where his work on e-cigarette policy is playing a vital role in tobacco harm reduction. He has also consistently championed legalising and regulating cannabis as a way to protect young people, cut crime, and deliver social justice for those affected by criminalisation.

As well as his many achievements in the world of politics, Norman is also well-known for kickstarting the career of Tinchy Stryder and gaining the endorsement of Dappy from N-Dubz when running for Lib Dem leader in 2015. Nice.

He will be speaking on "The Lessons of Cannabis in Canada" following his visit to Canada with a cross-party group of MPs earlier this year, which was chronicled by the BBC and released as a short documentary ([link removed]) .

FREEDOM'S FIGHTERS

The Adam Smith Institute is honoured to welcome the Rt Hon Sir John Redwood MP
for our September Freedom’s Fighters. Sir John has been the Member of Parliament for Wokingham since 1987 and has held various ministerial and cabinet positions, both as a member of Government and the Opposition. He was knighted in the 2019 New Year Honours for political and public service.

As a stalwart conservative devoted to public service, we are looking forward to hearing more about his life and work.

Freedom’s Fighters is one of our smaller events, with just 24 guests. If you would like to request a space on the waiting list, please do so by emailing [email protected].

BORIS
We at the Adam Smith Institute are pleased to host the Cuban journalist Boris González Arenas to give account of his experiences reporting in the country, human rights issues and the real political situation in Cuba.

Boris González Arenas, born in 1976 and who lives in Havana, graduated in history from Havana University and as filmmaker from the International School of Cinema of San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV).

Most of his work has been published in Diario de Cuba, a journal with which he has collaborated since 2014. Other publications appeared in the journal 14ymedio, the Brazilian magazine Época, and the Cuban American magazine Identidades.

He developed his academic career as a professor of the history of philosophy in the Institute of Arts in Havana, and professor of humanities in the International School of Cinema of San Antonio de los Baños. In January 2015, this work was terminated because of his activism and writings. He is currently a spokesperson of the Mesa de Unidad de Acción Democrática (MUAD) and member of the electoral initiative #Otro18, both platforms for democratic development from the civil society in Cuba.

We look forward to hearing the truth first hand about a country so often portrayed as content under a regime that has shut down dissent and held back development.
