How is it that Republicans can pass unpopular policies and seemingly redraw maps at the drop of a dime to skate accountability and unfairly hold on to power? What started in Texas after Trump ordered legislators to give him five more seats has created a ripple effect across the country in states like Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Florida, and Kansas. Our democracy is being threatened by Republicans who have no concern for voters and are only focused on how they can rig the upcoming midterm elections. It’s high time we changed that. Democrats in Congress just reintroduced the Redistricting Reform Act — legislation that would require each state to have independent commissions draw maps. With this bill, mid-decade map redraws would essentially be banned, and every state would be held to the same standards to achieve fair maps. A.G. Eric Holder sums up the importance of this bill perfectly: “The unprecedented and unpopular mid-decade power grabs in Texas and Missouri at the direction of Donald Trump underscore that the current system — a system protected by too many Republicans — does not work. An overwhelming majority of Americans oppose partisan gerrymandering because it leaves all citizens worse off by sowing extreme division, undermining equal representation, and boosting the influence of powerful special interests. We must pursue a bold, new vision for our country by building a system that gives power back to the people instead of compromised politicians.” The NDRC has always been committed to fighting for fair representation over the long haul — including by supporting federal solutions to root out gerrymandering and unfair redistricting. We’re also engaged in state-by-state fights when they emerge — and lately, it feels like map manipulation is spreading like wildfire. Thank you, Marina Jenkins
