Hey John,
There's a new Republican jumping into Arizona’s governor's race, and he's no stranger to us.
Last week, David Schweikert announced that he is leaving Congress to run for governor. Here's what you should know:
- He's been found guilty of 11 ethics violations for diverting campaign funds for personal vacations.
- He mocked the 365,000 Arizonans at risk of losing their health care as nothing more than "bedwetting and whining."
- He was a founding member of MAGA's House Freedom Caucus and votes with Trump 100% of the time.
We've been preparing for this fight: Schweikert was on our House On Notice list, and our very first endorsement this cycle was aimed at defeating him in Congress. Now, he's trying to unseat Gov. Katie Hobbs and undo her progress as governor.
While Gov. Hobbs has repealed Arizona's 1864 abortion ban and expanded homeownership through her Arizona Is Home project, Schweikert has sided with Trump on tariffs, supported one of the largest tax increases in 50 years, and stayed silent on Trump's dangerous plan to eliminate Arizona’s mail-in voting system.
Here's what to expect over the coming months: a Republican primary dominated by loyalty tests to Trump, a flood of billionaire money from GOP donors, and margins that will come down to the wire.
