Got some good news,
John

Madison County in New York showed us that addressing the root of gun
violence can help prevent shootings before they happen. This is even more
evidence that community intervention tactics work.

Moments like this, when communities get together to make sure our schools
are safe are critical. It shows that resources put in the correct
direction can really make a change and prevent tragedies. We say it time
and time again, but this proves just how preventable mass shootings are.

When Madison County got the alarms about a bullied teen in a house full of
guns who had just threatened to kill his fellow students, they put hands
all on deck. Not only did they secure the guns in his family’s house with
the proper locks, but they also directly addressed the students at the
school that were relentlessly bullying the teen who had threatened them.

We applaud Madison County for addressing the root causes of gun violence.
It’s a common myth that people who commit mass shootings “snap” one day.
In reality, there are usually signs, and multiple points where with the
proper training, resources, and policies, there could’ve been a
life-saving intervention.

The way Madison County’s community organized and showed up for this teen,
and this school took a lot of effort, but this it’s invaluable if it
prevents a school shooting.

But there are still easier ways to prevent mass shootings from happening:

“Gun legislation would absolutely reduce these incidents, and we
absolutely need it, full stop.” — Commissioner Bray, New York Homeland
Security and Emergency Services

Strong gun legislation will always be the best way to save lives.
