John,
Our nation’s elections are coming under attack again.
The America First Legal Foundation submitted a petition to the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) — an independent government body — that would require citizens to submit a passport, birth certificate, or other proof of citizenship documents to register to vote.
Not only does this risk disenfranchising millions of eligible citizens that don’t have ready access to such documents — particularly rural folks, students, women, and communities of color — but it would also force state and local election offices, already under financial and staffing strain, to absorb significant new responsibilities with no additional resources. It would also be redundant, because every state already has systems in place to verify voter identity and eligibility.
This proposal is unnecessary, costly, legally and constitutionally questionable, and unworkable. And we need your help to make sure the EAC knows that Americans are against it.
The EAC is taking public comments to gather input on whether they should adopt this anti-voter initiative. They need to hear from people like you about how damaging this policy would be before they make their decision. And it only takes a couple of minutes to make your voice heard.
Click here to submit your comment and speak out against this proposed barrier to the voter registration process. You can say something like the below — or personalize it!:
I’m against requiring citizens to submit a passport, birth certificate, or other citizenship document to register to vote. This proposal would saddle election officials with unfunded mandates, expose them to new legal risks, and create confusion and disenfranchisement for voters — all while duplicating safeguards that already exist.
Submitting a comment is critical; every comment helps show the EAC that everyday Americans are standing up for the freedom to vote and protecting the promise of our democracy.
Thank you for making your voice heard,
Michael McNulty Policy Director, Issue One
