EARTHJUSTICE | BECAUSE THE EARTH NEEDS A GOOD LAWYER
Earthjustice Attorney Jenny Harbine
Dear Friend,
I feel lucky to live in Southwest Montana, near the point where the rugged Northern Rockies meet the plains. Many people associate this region with the breathtakingly beautiful Greater Yellowstone and Crown-of-the-Continent ecosystems, which are home to some of our country’s most iconic wildlife species — bison, bears, and wolves.
But some of my favorite views are to the east, including the prairies, rolling hills, and breaks of the Tongue River and Powder River watersheds. There is nothing more beautiful than the sunset against a fading blue sky over sandstone buttes and grasslands.
My team at Earthjustice fights to protect this land, its ecosystems, and its people. It is wild, vast, and beautiful — but it is not impervious.
The largest coal-mining region in the country, the Powder River Basin, stretches across a large expanse of Montana and Wyoming. Open-pit mines scar the land, growing bigger by the day. Earthjustice has fought coal mining here for decades, forcing state and federal agencies to confront the damage coal mining causes, and finally winning an end to on federal leasing in the Powder River Basin in 2024.
But if Trump administration has its way, this closure will be reversed and the government will give away 13.1 million acres of public lands for new coal mining. We don’t intend to let that happen. The era of coal is over, and it’s time for this land to heal.
As the managing attorney of the Northern Rockies office at Earthjustice, I am proud of my team and our accomplishments, which extend far beyond our wins against coal mining. Grizzlies are making a comeback, in large part thanks to work my team has done to protect their habitat. Hundreds of bison roam wild in Montana where none did 10 years ago, thanks to tribal stewardship and improvements in federal bison policy that Earthjustice is defending in court. I am grateful that I can do my part, and I know our job is just beginning.
My colleagues have created a web feature that showcases our major wins, current lawsuits, and big fights ahead — it’s incredible, and I invite you to learn about our work in greater depth.

Lastly, I want to emphasize: Our real strength comes from the partners we represent. The region’s Tribes, ranchers, and environmental groups inspire us, keep us grounded, and maintain the region’s ecology long after we leave the courtroom.
We represent our clients free of charge, so every lawsuit we file is possible only thanks to donors like you. Thank you for your generosity in these perilous times.
