I was on MSNBC yesterday to talk about something that should alarm every American: Donald Trump’s threat to deploy our troops against Americans at home.

Trump has repeatedly shown a willingness to deploy troops against American citizens. He’s sent the National Guard into Los Angeles, DC, and Chicago, and tried to deploy troops in Portland this weekend. Worse still, he has threatened to deploy troops into “war” against our fellow Americans.

John, I’m a veteran. I’ve worn our nation’s uniform and I know exactly what it means to see our country send troops into harm’s way. So let me make this incredibly clear:

This is dangerous and goes against our American traditions. We don’t need a president who has almost unlimited power. It’s dangerous for an American president to even talk about deploying American troops and call it a “war” against our own citizens on our own streets.

I also serve on the Armed Services Committee, where we have oversight over the Pentagon. I take those responsibilities and my oath seriously. It’s our job in Congress to serve as a check on the president—and that means updating the Insurrection Act, putting real guardrails in place, and making sure Trump (and any president) can never use our military as a political weapon.

But my Republican colleagues in Washington? They’re doing nothing about this abuse of power.

We can’t let Trump’s power grab go unchecked. This isn’t a partisan issue—it’s about protecting the rule of law, our Constitution, and the rights of every citizen.
