Hey there, John --
We wanted to give you an update on the status of applying for an absentee ballot for Iowa’s general election this November.
Before the June 2nd primary, Secretary of State Paul Pate approved applications for mail-in ballots for all registered voters. It set a new record for primary election turnout in the state, and the data shows that nearly 80% of ballots were returned by mail.
But, a couple weeks ago, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law that prohibits Secretary Pate from altering the election in an emergency without approval from the House Legislative Council. And last week that Legislative Council voted against the Secretary of State sending out absentee ballot request forms.
Can you guess who voted TWICE for that voter suppression bill that will force Iowans to choose between their health and their right to vote? You guessed it -- Randy Feenstra.
This is simple and honestly, should be a non-partisan statement: our elected officials should make voting safe and easy. To do that during a global pandemic, all registered voters should receive a mail-in ballot application for the general election -- like we did in the primary election. But sadly, as of now, that’s not the case.
These blatant voter suppression tactics are despicable. They heighten the risk for the most vulnerable among us, like our seniors, folks with disabilities, and folks with pre-existing conditions. They add unnecessary hurdles and make a non-political issue into a political football.
But we can take matters into our own hands and stand up to those who want to make it harder to exercise our right to vote. Starting today, you can print out your absentee ballot request form yourself here: [link removed] and hand deliver or mail it to your county auditor. (You can find those addresses here >> [link removed]) Those absentee ballots will be mailed out on October 5th so you have plenty of time to safely vote from home before the November 3rd election.
Thank you for sticking with us -- together, we’ll push to have a fair, safe, and secure election this November.
