Yet again, conservative activists are scheming to make it harder for millions of eligible Americans to vote.
America First Legal—cofounded by Trump adviser and cartoon-villain-come-to-life Stephen Miller—has asked the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to require Americans to show a passport or other citizenship document when registering to vote, documents 21 million Americans don’t have readily available.
That basically means that Trump and his band of MAGA henchmen have found a backdoor, administrative way to disenfranchise millions by essentially implementing the SAVE Act without having to go through Congress.
I’m against requiring citizens to submit a passport, birth certificate, or other citizenship documents to register to vote! Only half of American citizens have a passport and 69 million American citizens don’t have a birth certificate with their current legal name on it, most of them women who changed their names when they got married.

Here’s a reminder of the impact this kind of policy would have on Americans across the country:
- 21.3 million citizens do not readily have access to any proof of citizenship.
- Half of all Americans—146 million people—do not have a passport at all.
- 69 million American women don't have birth certificates with their new, married names.
That is who’s at risk if EAC moves forward with this request. Millions of eligible voters will be denied the right to vote—and one of those voters could be you, your friends, or your family.

Thanks for all you do.
