Sadly, the U.S. government has entered a second week of a shutdown as Washington Democrats try to force American taxpayers to pay for health care for illegal immigrants and authorize trillions of new dollars in federal spending. These demands are completely unreasonable, and everyday Americans are the ones who feel the impacts of their political games the most. Mann.House.Gov Fighting to End Democrats' Government Shutdown On September 19, House Republicans voted to keep the government open by passing a clean, non-partisan continuing resolution. Senate Republicans also voted to keep the government open, but the vast majority of Senate Democrats blocked this resolution, forcing federal funding to lapse and resulting in the government shutdown. Our seven-week CR that passed in the U.S. House of Representatives would allow the government to stay open at current funding levels while Congress finishes up the appropriations process. Instead of working with Republicans, Democrat leadership, at the beck and call of far-left activists, demanded that Congress restore free health care for illegal immigrants paid for by American taxpayers, and add $1.5 trillion in new spending on a COVID-era health care policy issue completely unrelated to government funding. These political games put some of our most vulnerable and brave Americans at risk. Make no mistake—this shutdown is Washington Democrats’ to own. Every year, I offer the same experience to students across the Big First.
