Banned Books Week 2025: Stand Up for the Freedom to Read
Hey John,
Book bans are on the rise. LGBTQ+-affirming content in K–12 schools is under attack. It’s time to stand up for the freedom to read. That’s why our project, Hope in a Box—an LGBTQ+-inclusive curriculum-to-classroom program—is more critical than ever.
Our partners at the American Library Association (ALA) have kicked off Banned Books Week 2025 (October 5–11). Will you join us in celebrating the right to read and finding freedom in the pages of a book?

In 2024 alone, the ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked:
-
821 attempts to censor books and resources in libraries
- 2,452 unique book titles targeted—many representing LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC voices
First, head to the ALA’s webpage to grab free digital assets and help spread the word about Banned Books Week. Then, go further: support Hope in a Box so every student can feel safe, welcome, and included at school—regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
Together, we can ensure every student has the freedom to read—and the freedom to be themselves. Donate to Hope in a Box to ensure that Advocates can continue to reach thousands of students and educators.
