The Truth About Democrats' Government Shutdown

Senate Democrats have voted FIVE times to shut down the government. As Democrats continue to hold government funding hostage, our seniors, veterans, federal workers, and families are paying the price.

Democrats, who once claimed shutdowns are "dangerous," "disastrous," and "self-inflicted harm," now use false narratives to justify their destructive actions to shut down the government:

MYTH VS. FACT

MYTH: Republicans are responsible for the government shutdown -- they have control of the House, Senate, and White House.

FACT: In the Senate, 60 votes are required to pass a government funding bill. Republicans currently hold 53 seats in the Senate, requiring a bipartisan vote. That's why Speaker Johnson and Republicans delivered a clean, nonpartisan continuing resolution to keep the government funded for seven weeks.

MYTH: Republicans are "ripping away" health care from Americans.

FACT: The Democrats' counterproposal would repeal Republicans' strengthened Medicaid laws and give illegal aliens and able-bodied young men taxpayer-funded health care. Their proposal would also rescind Republicans' $50 billion rural hospital fund, which was hard-fought by Speaker Johnson in the Working Families Tax Cuts. Republicans will continue to strengthen Americans' -- and American-only -- health care.

MYTH: Republicans won't negotiate with Democrats.

FACT: Republicans delivered a clean, NONPARTISAN continuing resolution to fund the government for seven weeks. There is nothing to negotiate, as there are no partisan priorities or funding measures in the House-passed bill. On the contrary, Democrats' counterproposal would cost $1.5 trillion of additional spending and is filled with partisan priorities, including reinstating taxpayer-funded health care for ILLEGAL aliens.

MYTH: Republicans' funding bill is partisan.

FACT: There are no Republican policy measures included in the nonpartisan, House-passed continuing resolution. Republicans purposely kept the continuing resolution CLEAN to keep the government funded, allow time for the bipartisan appropriations process, and protect critical services for seniors, veterans, and families. Notably, Democrats voted for this near-exact bill 13 times under the Biden Administration.
