Dear Friend,

We're pleased to invite you to a virtual event on October 9th, 2025, co-hosted by the Pan African Agenda Institute, The Sentry, and Open Society Foundations, to discuss the findings of The Sentry's recent investigative report:

“Power and Plunder: The Eritrean Defense Forces Intervention in Tigray.”

The report details extensive evidence of industrial-scale looting and trafficking in gold, antiquities, and human beings during and after the conflict in Tigray (2020–2022). It further highlights widespread atrocities—including gang rape, torture, kidnapping, and mutilation—carried out under the watch of the Eritrean Defense Forces. Beyond documenting these crimes, the report warns that Eritrea’s ongoing illicit financial activities pose renewed risks of instability and conflict in the region.

This high-level discussion will:

  • Present key findings of The Sentry's report
  • Explore implications for peace, justice, and accountability in Tigray and the wider Horn of Africa
  • Discuss financial and diplomatic tools available for prevention of wars and accountability
  • Deliberate on urgent actions required to prevent further conflict and atrocities and to support regional peace and security

The event will feature distinguished speakers from each of the co-organizing institutions—Pan African Agenda, The Sentry, and Open Society Foundations—who will provide expert insights and perspectives on the report’s findings and recommendations.
