Dear John:

Last week the Democrats let the federal government shut down. Over two weeks ago, in the House, we passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) that would allow us to finish the work we have begun. Our clean CR would give us six weeks to finish the appropriations process, funding the government through regular order.

The CR then went to the Senate and the Democrats have now voted four times against the bipartisan House version. Ultimately, it stops us from doing the job our constituents sent us to Washington to do and instead, looking to their own interests and agenda - putting America last.

My Office is Still Open!

My staff is still at work and we continue to look for ways to encourage the Democrats to stop playing partisan politics, come together to re-open the government, and be able to continue working on the funding bills.

Are you having trouble with federal agencies as a result of the Democrats' shutdown? My office is here to help. Click here to connect with my office.

How the shutdown might affect you

My office is working on tracking what is happening with the shutdown and what effects you might be seeing in the district. Here are some updates for you.*

Social Security Administration (SSA)

While some of the employees will be furloughed, most will continue their duties. Medicare card replacements, earning records corrections and updates to benefits, processing of over-payments, accounting for payees, and FOIA requests will be discontinued during this time. The SSA will continue processing new benefits applications. However, disability determination services may continue with limited services. All other operations will continue at this time.

Veterans’ Administration (VA)

The ongoing functions at the VA will include veteran medical care and critical services, benefits operations, call centers, and other various offices.

Some of the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) functions will cease for the time being. Things like the Education Call Center (GI Bill hotline), loan programs, and outreach programs will be put on hold.

Farm Service Agency (FSA)

About two-thirds of the FSA employees are currently furloughed. There will be some FSA employees on call to ensure the continuity of operations in the case of a natural disaster response and for the security interest of the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC). A lot of the other functions of the agency will be paused during the shutdown.

*These agency functions are subject to change, but this is the information our office has at this time. We will work to continue to update you as we have information to share.

If you have questions, please reach out to my office.

Democrat CR - What's in it?

The Democrat's Continuing Resolution (CR) is a counter proposal that would cost the American people around $1.5 trillion dollars! It is anything but straightforward.

The Democrat CR includes:

  • Restoring taxpayer-funded free healthcare for illegal aliens.
  • Propping up liberal news programs.
  • Prioritizing electric vehicle access to HOV lanes, regardless of the vehicle's occupancy.
  • Removing work requirements for able-bodied, non-working adults on taxpayer-funded health programs.
  • Resuming DEI projects in foreign countries.
  • Handing criminals over $1 billion more for taxpayer-funded defense.
  • Repealing $50 billion in rural health care funding, hurting hospitals and clinics in vulnerable communities, which would have a direct impact on the Seventh Congressional District.
  • Rescinding border security measures passed through the Working Families Tax Cuts.

The point of the CR is to gives us a little extra time to do our job, not add a radical agenda to the books.

The bottom line: Democrats are putting Americans last.

Where are we at with re-opening the Government?

The Continuing Resolution (CR) that the U.S. House passed would have kept the government open. The CR is now sitting in the Senate. Sixty (60) votes are needed in the Senate to pass this bill.

This clean CR is the same language that Democrats voted for thirteen times under the last administration.

The only difference between the last CR that was passed and this one, is who is sitting in the White House. Democrats are refusing to do what is best for America and the American people.

Democrats need to be willing to come to the table to re-open the government and stop holding it hostage.

I voted to avoid all of this. I voted to keep the government open—and I am still fighting to end this Democrat-created crisis.

House Republicans have done our part. Re-opening the government is in the hands of Senate Democrats.
