As recently as the 1990s, the median first-time homebuyer in America was 28 years old. Now they’re 38. And Pittsburgh, a city renowned for its affordability, is no exception ([link removed]) .

Real estate professionals told Public Source mounting student debt, prices that rise faster than wages and corporate homebuyers are all factors conspiring to keep Pittsburghers from buying their first homes until later in life than ever before ([link removed]) .

“It’s going to lead to instability in some neighborhoods,” if the trend continues, said Richard Snipe of the city’s Urban Redevelopment Authority.

Public Source is launching a new series this week ([link removed]) , investigating the causes and consequences behind Pittsburghers achieving homeownership later in life than ever before.
