Dear Friends --
NIMBYs continue to flood Governor Gavin Newsom's office with calls against SB 79 – and LA mayor Karen Bass is urging him to veto it. Will you step up and ask Governor Newsom to sign SB 79?
MAKE THE CALL >>
We haven't received any indication the Governor intends to veto SB 79. Governor Newsom has been a strong champion of the pro-housing movement in California -- he's signed all of the most important pro-housing bills into law, including those sponsored by California YIMBY. His office has also leaned into enforcing state housing laws, and he's personally called out bad, anti-housing behavior by local governments. He and his team are reviewing the bill, and he has until Sunday, October 12 to act.
But powerful housing opponents in Los Angeles are turning up the pressure, and we can't take any chances.
SB 79 is a crucial step toward tackling California's housing shortage and affordability crisis. By building more homes near many of our state's rail stations, we can make it easier for Californians to afford to buy or rent a home near transit. Doing so also reduces climate pollution, while allowing more people to avoid the megacommutes that have become notorious in the Bay Area and Southern California.
Legislative passage of SB 79 was a massive victory seven years in the making. We overcame enormous opposition from NIMBYs at every turn. Each vote in committee and on the floor was close.
But YIMBYs like you stepped up and put in the work to win – including thousands of emails and calls. Those contacts made a major difference and helped secure the votes we needed.
Unsurprisingly, NIMBYs are furious and desperate. They know they have one last chance to stop SB 79 from becoming law: flood the Governor's office with calls urging him to veto it.
We've had a huge grassroots response of our own. YIMBYs across California have sent in hundreds of emails and made hundreds of calls to the Governor urging him to sign SB 79. But this is the final week. If you've already called, please call again! We need to show the Governor that Californians are eager for him to continue showing leadership on housing.
Will you ask Governor Newsom to sign SB 79?
Thank you so much for everything you’ve done to help support this bill.
