Content Warning: The following mentions sexual violence.
In the time since the war in Ukraine began, 1.8 million women and girls have been displaced from their homes. Many are exposed to a shocking surge in violence and forced to live in overcrowded shelters, with no privacy at all.
Because of the ongoing attacks, women and girls are afraid to be in public spaces. However, because they cannot leave their homes, many are at a heightened risk of domestic violence.
Overall, domestic abuse, sexual violence, and other forms of violence have left an estimated 4 million people — mostly women and girls — in urgent need of support services.
U.S. government funding for UNFPA’s lifesaving work has been gutted, leaving UNFPA midwives, safe spaces, mobile health clinics and gynecology teams, and other lifesaving services out of reach to those in need. We cannot look away from the crisis. We need to be there for women and girls in Ukraine.
UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, is doing everything we can to provide psychosocial support, legal aid, safe spaces, and more for women and girls whose lives are in jeopardy. But we can’t reach them without your support. Will you rush in an emergency gift to help save the lives of women and girls facing violence in Ukraine and beyond? [[link removed]?]

Despite a mountain of challenges, local women-led organizations continue to serve as lifelines, offering shelters, helplines, counseling, and legal aid. Many of the women leading this work have been displaced themselves, but are still willing to put their safety at risk to help others avoid the same fate, or worse.

Community leaders like Kseniia lead safe evacuation of residents and drive into hard-to-reach places on the frontlines of the conflict to deliver food and other essential aid.
"I can't imagine myself anywhere else...I did not have a single day of rest. I can’t remember when I last ate, slept calmly, had time for relatives or took care of myself," Kseniia shared.
UNFPA serves 23 regions of Ukraine, ensuring women and girls can access the care they need wherever they are. We are able to deliver relief because compassionate people like you join in this important work. We must meet the rising need for care in Ukraine and crisis regions around the globe.
