Dear friend,
Welcome to your Weekly Wrap, a recap of the week in the district and highlights of my work.
Weekly Wrap: September 29 - October 3, 2025 |
Government Funding
Today marks day six of the federal government shutdown and there is still no indication of how long it will last.
Republicans control the White House and hold majorities in both the Senate and the House. The gridlock comes from a refusal to work with Democrats to create a bipartisan solution to lower costs and protect affordable healthcare for the American people.
The House has not taken a vote since September 19, 2025. Speaker Johnson canceled votes last week and this week, stating that he does not believe we should be in Washington - the ball is in the Senate’s court, and there is nothing for the House to negotiate.
By refusing to negotiate, Republicans will allow the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits to expire. Families across the country, including my constituents in the Fifth District, will be left to deal with the consequences.
Access Health Connecticut Press Conference
On Friday, the Connecticut Delegation came together with Access Health Connecticut to stress what is at stake if the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies expire.
It is estimated each of the 45 million Americans enrolled in coverage related to the Affordable Care Act will be affected as premiums, copays, and deductibles skyrocket. American families are projected to see their out-of-pocket premiums increase by 114%.
Over 150,000 people in Connecticut receive healthcare through the exchange. In the Fifth District, 23,000 people will see their healthcare costs rise.
The repercussions of these cuts will be even more damaging for Connecticut families as the cruel cuts included in H.R. 1, the One Beautiful Bill Act go into effect. H.R. 1 will cause 17 million Americans to lose healthcare coverage, including 34,513 people in CT-05 who will lose access to Medicaid.
It is not just healthcare that is at stake in this shutdown.
Vital federal services that Americans rely on have been frozen. Paychecks for federal workers, benefits for veterans, and food and safety inspections will experience delays.
I implore House Republicans to return to Washington so we can work in a bipartisan way to protect healthcare and open the federal government.
That’s a wrap.
Thank you for taking the time to read this update. As always, please continue to share your thoughts and priorities with me.
