John,
It's Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes. Inside Climate News just featured my work taking on utilities and protecting Arizona from climate disasters – and I wanted to share more about my office’s work in this area.
Arizona Public Service wants to raise Arizonans’ electricity rates by 14 percent, despite making more than $600 million in profits last year.
At the same time, the all-Republican Arizona Corporation Commission is trying to repeal the state's renewable energy and energy efficiency standards – standards I helped create back when I was a Republican commissioner.
This is pure corporate greed, and I'm intervening to stop it.
Here's what's at stake: Arizonans already pay more for electricity than consumers in 38 other states. APS has gotten rate increases of 8% in 2024, 8% in 2023, and 4.5% in 2017. Now they want another 14%?
When it gets over 110 degrees in Arizona, air conditioning isn't a luxury – it's the difference between life and death.
Energy efficiency helps keep the grid stable during our hottest days. Renewable energy, like solar and wind, is the least expensive way to provide electricity. Yet the Corporation Commission wants to let utilities do whatever they want, and we all know what happens then – they build expensive power plants and ratepayers foot the bill.
While most of my emails ask for your financial support, this time I encourage you to check out the Inside Climate News article. Click the link below to learn more about how we’re keeping rates low in Arizona → [ [link removed] ]
