Dear friend,
Today marks 108 years since the birth of the unrelenting civil rights organizer Fannie Lou Hamer. From prayer and song to youth organizing and economic security, Hamer knew that victories in the movement for racial and gender justice could not happen in a vacuum. To her work, she brought her faith, cutting political analysis, unfailing determination, and an eye on the long arc of history. Today, we honor that tradition.
In this letter:
* New Resource: “None of us is free” by Arnaé Batson
* What you need to know about the poverty numbers.
* Call for young organizers: Apply to be part of the Young Organizers Survival Corps.
* DC, you’re invited! We Pray Freedom in-person launch event
We cry power. We demand justice. We pray freedom.

** Celebrating Fannie Lou Hamer
------------------------------------------------------------
Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer with a brand new cultural resource: “None of us is free” by Arnaé Batson.

Fannie Lou Hamer understood the role faith and culture in organizing generally, and in poor people’s organizing specifically. She embodied the idea that political and economic rights were inseparable. Here’s a few of our favorite resources highlighting these core values of hers.
Reading the Bible with the Poor
“Sometimes it seems like to tell the truth today is to run the risk of being killed. But if I fall, I’ll fall five feet four inches forward in the fight for freedom. I’m not backing off.”

Cultural and faith-based organizing
"I don't really know where Mrs. Hamer is standing, but she is standing there solidly, feet planted firmly apart...she can sing with us over the distance, and from her vantage point she can see us all."

Poor People’s Organizing
“To have a great country, not only will we have to have political power, but we will have to have economic power as well.”

** The Young Organizers Survival Corps today!
------------------------------------------------------------
From her work organizing Freedom Summer with SNCC, Fannie Lou Hamer knew what organized, militant, non-violent young people could accomplish. It is in that very tradition that we are announcing the Young Organizers Survival Corps today.
Are you a young person ready to start organizing in your community, or deepen your commitment and connection to the work you’re already doing? If so, The Young Organizers Survival Corps might be for you! The Young Organizers Survival Corps is a 7-month experience connecting you with fellow activists, organizers, and young people from across the country who are hungry to get organized for the long haul and resist authoritarianism.
Application coming soon.
