SENATE UPDATE: Health-For-Illegals Shutdown, Week 2

Three Democrats have thus far voted to reopen the government. We need four more to end the shutdown.

Last Week

Senate Democrats made good on their threat to shut down the federal government over demands to fund health care for illegal immigrants. They blocked stopgap spending bills on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. President Trump immediately took advantage of the Democrats’ tantrum by cutting more than $25 billion in wasteful federal spending.

Three Democrats have thus far voted to reopen the government. They need four more to end the shutdown. Meanwhile, Senate Republicans continue to hold the line in one of their toughest conservative stands in memory.

Also, last week, the Senate confirmed two more of President Trump’s nominees:

  • Former congressman and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz to represent the U.S. in the United Nations General Assembly; and,

  • Former Senate candidate Hung Cao to be Under Secretary of the Navy.

Conservative Spotlight

MIKE LEE — U.S. Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) introduced a new bill to fight back against illegal immigrants’ abuse of U.S. public lands. During Joe Biden’s open borders crisis, drug cartels and illegal migrants sneaked onto unguarded federal lands to avoid Border Patrol. Lee’s bill will allow federal agents to patrol and operate on those lands — to crack down on crime, clean up national parks and forests, and apprehend foreign trespassers. Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rick Scott (R-FL) have cosponsored Lee’s bill.

JOSH HAWLEY — Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) wants answers from the Food and Drug Administration after the agency approved a new generic abortion drug last week. The pill has been found to be dangerous to women who take it, and the FDA was supposed to be reviewing its risks and side effects when the new approval was announced. Hawley wrote to the FDA Administrator on Friday, and pro-lifers on and off Capitol Hill are working to reverse the decision.

CYNTHIA LUMMIS — U.S. Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) — Congress’s “Crypto Queen” — announced last week that the Senate’s tax-writing Finance Committee is making significant progress on a conservative bill to modernize and clarify tax rules for digital currencies. Lummis is the co-sponsor of the GENIUS Act — which established a regulatory framework for stablecoins — that passed Congress and was signed into law by President Trump in July.

This Week

The big news this week will once again be the ongoing government shutdown, now in its sixth day. The Senate is scheduled to vote again tonight to reopen the government. As of now, Democrats are expected to block it again.

The Senate will then turn to more than three dozen nominations, including Herschel Walker to be U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas.
