It’s been a busy week here at CREW. We filed a class action lawsuit along with several partners on behalf of millions of Americans against the Trump administration for its unlawful creation of “National Data Banks” that consolidate sensitive personal information across federal agencies.
This poses serious privacy and data-security risks for Americans and threatens to disenfranchise eligible voters.

Our lawsuit is making waves—and for good reason. It challenges a dangerous and unprecedented effort by the Trump administration to consolidate Americans’ personal data across federal agencies, putting privacy, civil liberties and voting rights at serious risk.
Here’s what some stories are saying:
Bloomberg Law: [[link removed]] “Congress passed the Privacy Act in 1974 to prevent the government from consolidating the personal information of Americans stored in separate agencies, but DHS and the Department of Government Efficiency are now creating a web of linked data systems to allow centralized queries and analyses of this sensitive data.”
By unlawfully pooling sensitive personal records from across the government, the Trump administration is putting Americans’ voting rights and civil liberties at risk.
NPR [[link removed]] : “The suit argues that use of the overhauled SAVE by states could mislabel U.S. citizens who are eligible to vote as noncitizens and could lead to their disenfranchisement or make them targets of wrongful criminal investigations for lawfully voting.”
This has already begun in some states, according to reports.
Democracy Docket: [[link removed]] “Some Republican secretaries of state have said they’ve used the expanded SAVE program to search their voter registration records for potential non-citizens. Federal prosecutors appointed by Trump have also aggressively pursued felony charges in non-citizen voting and registration cases.”
This unlawful data consolidation threatens to disenfranchise eligible voters and subject Americans to unwarranted investigations—and it should not continue.
