We’re now six days into the Republican-manufactured government shutdown.
And here’s the plain truth: The majority party in Congress shut it down because they are committed to cutting health care.
Congressional Republicans shut down the government to protect Donald Trump’s cruel Medicaid cuts and let health care premiums spike for working families. They’re refusing to work with Democrats to reverse the damage they created — all to keep the billionaire donors fueling Trump’s corrupt hold on power happy.
There is absolutely no reason they can’t do their jobs and come to the table to negotiate a deal.
Democrats are ready. We’ve been ready. And every day, we’re holding the line to defend people’s health care and reopen the government. But while we fight to protect care, House Republicans are more interested in political spin and partisan games. I won’t let them get away with it.
My neighbors in Delaware are already being furloughed. People who rely on ACA coverage are staring down massive premium hikes. And if this shutdown drags on, food assistance that families rely on to feed their children will lapse, and veterans will lose services. And it’s all a direct result of political choices made by Republicans in power.
I didn’t come to Congress to watch this kind of cruelty play out in silence. I came here to fight for working families — and I’m staying in this fight until the government is back open and care is protected because lives depend on it.
