Be Safe, Be Seen

Be Safe, Be Seen - woman standing on street corner under streetlight wearing reflective yellow jacket

Fall brings back shorter, gray days with lots of rain. Pedestrians, bicyclists, and riders waiting at bus stops can be hard to see. Help our drivers and others on the road see you!

* *Wear brightly colored or reflective clothes.* Drivers can see you up to 500 feet away in bright clothes compared to only 55 feet in dark clothes.
* *Add some shine.* Put reflectors on easy-to-see places like your shoes, backpack, purse, bicycle spokes, jacket sleeves and pant legs.
* *Light yourself up.* Use a flashlight, flashing safety strobe or light from your cell phone. Stand up and wave when your bus approaches to help our drivers see you.

It's Walk to School Month

Join us for Walk to School Month! During the month of October, kids and their families are encouraged to walk, bike or roll to school. Walking, biking and rolling to school helps to:

* Build community with neighbors.
* Promote good health and activity.
* Reduce road traffic and congestion.
* Improve air quality around schools.

If you are driving, help keep families safe by always following the speed limit of 20 miles per hour in school zones and stopping for pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections.

Walk N Roll partners with Olympia, Tumwater and North Thurston school districts to organize events throughout the year. Visit* intercitytransit.com/services/walknroll/encouragement [ [link removed] ]* to see if your school is participating or email us directly at *[email protected] <[email protected]>* to learn more.

Rider Tip: Plan Ahead

Rider Tip: Plan Ahead - person using laptop to view the Intercity Transit homepage

It’s a busy world, and no one likes to be late for an appointment. When taking the bus, it's important to remember there are often multiple buses going to similar locations. The Intercity Transit website is a fantastic resource for finding different options for the exact time you’re leaving. Try the Trip Planner on our website or Google Maps to find backup options if you are delayed for any reason.

Having a backup plan before you leave home is even more important as the days get shorter. Make sure to check how far you have to walk to reach another bus stop. Always carry a flashlight and wear bright clothing so you are easy to see.

Ask a driver or one of our Transit Ambassadors if you have any questions. For any trip, plan ahead, plan for delays, wear weather appropriate clothing and enjoy your ride with confidence.

Upcoming Bus Stop Improvements

Upcoming Bus Stop Improvements - Intercity Transit bus stop in the fall

Intercity Transit's contractor, Four Seasons Concrete Construction, will soon begin improving bus stops throughout the service area. Improvements include extended concrete pads, bulb-outs and enhanced bulb-outs at key locations.

Along with more efficient transit operations, these upgrades will reduce wait times and make it easier for riders to board buses. The larger boarding areas will allow all-door access, improving accessibility and rider experience.

Improvements will be made to 147 existing bus stops, including:

* 64 stops in the City of Olympia.
* 44 stops in the City of Lacey.
* 17 stops in the City of Tumwater.
* 10 stops in the City of Yelm.

This project is funded by Congresswoman Strickland’s Community Project Funding Requests and WSDOT’s Regional Mobility Grant Program.

The project will begin this fall and is weather dependent. We will let passengers know when to expect bus stop closures on routes they ride. If you haven’t signed up to receive text or email alerts about service disruptions, sign up today at intercitytransit.com/subscribe [ [link removed] ].
