Last month, we reported some important news about Maryland’s schools: only 20% of our school buildings are in good or satisfactory condition. That means 80% need repair, renovation, or replacement just to meet basic standards. This data comes from the Interagency Commission on School Construction, also known as the IAC.

Our schools are a stabilizing force in our communities and the foundation for our economy. A strong school system isn’t just about classrooms — it’s about families, neighborhoods, and the workforce of tomorrow.
Inflation, rising construction costs, and a lack of federal money have made the challenge even more complicated. We hope this report is helpful to our state and local leaders as they deliberate over how to ensure that our kids have the modern, safe, and fully functional schools they need and deserve.
