Dear Friend,
We know how to make things work in Colorado. The federal government has a lot to learn from us, a point that is more evident now than ever.
I am ready to get to work as Colorado’s next Governor. We have heard you and know what we need from our state government: We must follow the rule of law, treat everyone fairly, and operate our state government transparently, collaboratively, efficiently, and effectively.
As your AG, I have been preparing for the work ahead. As a candidate, I visited rural Colorado and saw firsthand the depth of the opioid crisis. In Alamosa County, I learned that 90% of inmates in the local jail were struggling with addiction — and yet there were no treatment options available. As Attorney General, I took action: holding Big Pharma accountable, securing nearly $900 million for Colorado, and ensuring that Alamosa County now has the treatment facility it desperately needed. We need leadership right now, and this work shows what it can look like — transparent, collaborative, efficient, and effective. On his national TV broadcast, John Oliver had a lot of say about how other states have failed on their opioid response; he also called out Colorado and North Carolina as setting the gold standard for how transparent we have been in how we’re spending these funds. See his analysis at the 23:50 mark. [[link removed]]
Closer to home, Colorado commentator Kelly Sloan [[link removed]] applauded how we manage our opioid settlement funds. He recognized our commitment to transparency and focus on the crisis. He also praised Colorado’s decision to send funds directly to local and regional leaders, empowering them to decide how best to meet their communities’ needs. In contrast, he pointed out that other states mismanaged their settlements — dictating spending from state capitols or diverting funds to patch unrelated budget shortfalls. In Colorado, 90% of the funds are spent at the local and regional level. And they are making a real difference — Colorado saw a 30% reduction in opioid overdose deaths over 2024 as a result.
When the Trump administration sought to illegally withhold $230 million in public health funds, which support our behavioral health system, among other needs, we went to court — and we won. We have challenged a range of such illegal actions — and are winning again and again. When it comes to standing up to illegal actions by the Trump Administration, leadership matters. In other states, where leaders have not fought back, their citizens are being harmed. Take, for example, the case where Trump has illegally terminated Centers for Disease Control grants. As reported, [[link removed]] “Colorado, which joined the lawsuit, had 11 grant terminations at first, but then 10 were retained. Meanwhile, its neighboring states that didn’t sue — Wyoming, Utah, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma — collectively lost 55 grants, with none retained.” Here’s what that looks like.
LINK [LINK]In short, we must fight for what’s right and fair — at the state and federal level. And we must work together to retain the funds we are due and spend them transparently, collaboratively, efficiently, and effectively.
I know how to do both. I have done both. I am prepared and ready to lead Colorado as your next Governor. As I do so, I will work with you to fight for a Colorado that works for all of us, and a state government that is up to the task of doing just that.
