Hello,

This week, VRF endorsee Adelita Grijalva arrived in Washington to begin her tenure as a member of Congress. She was elected in a special election to succeed her father, Raúl Grijalva—also a VRF-endorsed champion—and was expected to be sworn in without delay.

In defiance of precedent, House Speaker Mike Johnson delayed her swearing-in and has yet to confirm her. Holding up this routine process, even on technical grounds, undermines the principles of representative democracy. Arizona voters have chosen their representative, and they deserve immediate, unimpeded representation free from partisan obstruction.

House leaders refusing to seat duly elected officials sets a dangerous precedent that VRF strongly condemns. Failing to certify Representative Grijalva is not a personal slight against her; it is a rebuke of the political autonomy of every constituent she represents.

Voting Rights Fund condemns any attempt to delay or subvert Representative Grijalva’s ability to serve her district. She must be sworn in without delay. Any other outcome would subvert the democratic decision of Arizona’s voters.

Voting Rights Fund wasn’t created just to defend voting rights — we elect the leaders who will expand and protect them. Our aim is to keep our operational costs as low as possible so a majority of our funds go toward doing the work that needs to be done. That means building a national bench of lawmakers who will fight tooth and nail to expand access to the ballot box and protect our right to vote at every level of government.
