Republicans manufactured this shutdown to further degrade our public services.

NNU - Medicare for All!

Right now, the federal government is still in the middle of a shutdown.

Let us be clear: Republicans, who control both chambers of Congress and the White House, manufactured this impasse by refusing to negotiate with Democrats on health care for millions of people. And they’re doing it just to further degrade and gut critical public services and advance an agenda to privatize vital functions currently provided by the federal government for the greater public good.

They already cut $1 trillion from Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, and other programs through their cruel budget bill H.R. 1 this summer, all to pay for tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires. Plus, they plan to let Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) subsidies expire at the end of the year. Altogether, these actions are expected to push 16 million Americans off their health insurance, close rural hospitals, and cut other health care services.

Democrats are fighting back by proposing a continuing resolution that would reopen the government, curb Trump’s power, and reverse the impending health care cuts. NNU is calling on Congress to pass this bill, the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions and other Matters Act of 2026 (H.R. 5450/S. 2882) — but we need your help to build the pressure!

Your senator is a key vote, and they need to hear from you TODAY. Call Senator John Fetterman using the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and urge them to continue standing strong, and vote NO on any budget that doesn’t include H.R. 5450/S. 2882! Feel free to use this script:

Hi, my name is _______. I am a constituent, and I’m a nurse/other health care worker/patient/Medicaid recipient/ally. I’m calling today to thank you for standing up to Republicans’ attempts to further gut our public health programs. I urge you to vote no on any budget package that doesn’t include the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions and other Matters Act of 2026 (H.R. 5450/S. 2882). Nurses support this proposal because not only will it curb Trump’s power and keep the government open, it saves lives by restoring health funding and assistance. Thank you.

As Mary Turner, RN and NNU president, said: “This administration wants to privatize and therefore monetize public services, without regard for working people and vulnerable communities.”

Not on our watch. Thank you for taking action.

In solidarity,
