EGLE seeking input on the draft Michigan Coastal Management Program’s 2026-2030 Enhancement Assessment and Strategies by November 7, 2025
The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Water Resources Division (WRD), Michigan Coastal Management Program (MCMP) is seeking public input on the draft 2026-2030 Enhancement Assessment and Strategy found on the MCMP website [ [link removed] ]. Comments on the draft are being accepted until November 7, 2025.
*Background*
Established in August 1978, the mission of the MCMP is to protect, conserve, restore, enhance, and wisely develop the coastal natural resources and cultural heritage on the nation’s longest freshwater coastline. The MCMP provides technical and financial assistance to promote coastal resiliency; supports the administration of the WRD’s resource regulatory programs; and oversees the Federal Consistency program in accordance with the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) of 1972.
Under Section 309 of the CZMA, every five years, the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) allows approved coastal programs within the National Coastal Zone Management Program to conduct comprehensive evaluations of their programs to identify gaps in which to target strategies for strengthening their coastal management programs. These dedicated program enhancement strategies cover the 2026-2030 funding cycles. Additional information about the Coastal Zone Enhancement Program is available on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s website [ [link removed] ].
The five following enhancement strategies are identified to strengthen the MCMP:
* Special Report and Policy Update for Michigan’s Environmental Areas.
* Resilient Coastal Communities Adaptation Strategies Toolkit Implementation.
* Create a Hazard Resilience Community of Practice.
* Lake Huron Flooding Resilience Study.
* Regulatory Determination of Readily Movable Structures Framework.
The MCMP welcomes public feedback on the draft assessment and the proposed strategies found on the MCMP website.
Input is available until November 7, 2025, using the MCMP Public Input Form [ [link removed] ].
