MCLA in the Community

1M History Makers Series with the OEOA

For Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month, MCLA partnered with the Governor’s Office on Equity, Opportunity, and Accesibility (OEOA) led by Ashley Oolman, and Centro Tyrone Guzmán ("Centro") in Minneapolis to host the 1M History Makers dedicated to the vibrancy and contributions of Latino Minnesotans. An intergenerational panel of community leaders from diverse backgrounds shared a story of their journeys with the public.

Moderated by Migdalia Loyola, former Deputy Chief of Staff for Public Engagement, the panel included Xavier Vasquez, Centro’s Executive Director; Miranda del Toro, Young Women’s Initiative; artist Elsie Carmona Quiterio, and Rosa Tock, MCLA’s Executive Director. The panelists shared their personal stories, lived experiences, how these stories relate to their identities and pride as Latines, and what it takes to lead with authenticity and work with the community. Attendees also enjoyed talking with First Lady Gwen Walz who addressed the audience and read the Latine Heritage Proclamation, and appetizers and fruit “paletas” from La Michoacana.

Special gracias to Centro Tyrone Guzmán and their team for their partnership over the years. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the OEOA in the near future.

Students Organizing

*COPAL’s Youth Committee Organizes to Defend the North Star Promise and the MN Dream Act Programs*

The Minnesota Council on Latino Affairs attended a press conference organized by COPAL’s MN Youth Committee in support of the young leaders and students who are organizing to defend the Minnesota Prosperity (Dream) Act and the North Star Promise program. Both programs are being threatened by a lawsuit by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Thanks to these courageous students, to the Attorney General Keith Ellison for his relentless defense of immigrant rights, and to LatinoLEAD for their advocacy in support of students.

As expressed by MCLA's Executive Director, Rosa Tock, "Do not lose hope! Fight with the power of your stories, the power of your convictions, the power of facts. It is your vision, your determination, and brilliance that will contribute for this state to be the best place to raise families and children, and prepare the most talented workforce that, in the end, will benefit ALL people in Minnesota. Adelante!"

There is a hearing about the case on October 14, 2025, 9:00 a.m., Minneapolis Federal Court House.

COPAL Press Conference
