Dear John,

Below you'll read about the family of Max, who was born with a cleft
lip and palate.

In a perfect storm of disasters, the Borderline Bar & Grill mass
shooting and the Woolsey fire forced Max's family to move five times
in eight nights, and Max, then several weeks old, to stay in three
intensive care units in four nights.

The family's story may be dramatic, but it is illustrative. Families
don't visit Children's Hospital Los Angeles in a vacuum. While their
children are sick or injured, they still deal with life outside our
walls.

This is why supporters like you are so important. You make our work
possible-and in doing so, help your fellow community members.

Back En Pointe

For three years, stabbing, shooting aches in her back affected every
part of Niki's life. It was hard to concentrate in school. She
couldn't remember the last time she slept peacefully through the
night. A competitive dancer, Niki would walk off the stage after
performances in tears.

Niki saw more than half a dozen specialists near her home in Las
Vegas. After receiving conflicting information, and trying everything
from physical therapy and cupping to back braces and steroid
injections, she was prepared to accept that "this would probably
affect me forever." Then a friend mentioned she should check out CHLA.
