We need to talk about the Trump administration weaponizing the Department of Justice to carry out its extreme, anti-voter agenda. Here’s some background: Historically, the Justice Department has been a critical check on attempts to deny voters access to the ballot. But now, the Trump administration is using it to subvert the voting process nationwide. NPR reports that the Justice Department has launched legal challenges against eight states, including Maine and Oregon, in an effort to obtain sensitive voter information. This is unprecedented. Here’s why this is a BIG problem: This is just the latest in a string of horrifying moves to undermine fair representation and the right to vote. Earlier this year, the Trump administration gutted the leadership of the Justice Department’s voting rights unit. The department is also urging the Supreme Court to strike down Louisiana’s fair congressional map and weaken the Voting Rights Act as we know it. This latest anti-democracy attack is incredibly dangerous. If states are forced to hand over voter rolls and sensitive voter data — including driver’s licenses and partial Social Security numbers — the Trump administration could exploit this information for partisan advantage.
Our voting process is under threat. Fair representation is at stake. And the future of the Voting Rights Act is on the line. Thanks so much, The NDRC Team
