August 23, 2008 was a day that changed my life.

My friend, Barack Obama, introduced me as his running mate -- his choice to be Vice President.

Folks, it was the greatest honor of my life. We spent those eight years in the White House going to work for the American people every day -- from the Recovery Act to the rescue of the auto industry to health care reform.

Now, I'm asking for the honor of serving you once more -- as your next president.

We are now living through a battle for the soul of this nation -- a battle I never thought we would have to fight again. Our very values -- the things that make us America -- are on the line.

You may say I'm being too optimistic, but I believe I'm being thoroughly realistic.
