ACTION SPOTLIGHT

Marine National Monuments Are Back on the
Chopping Block

The Trump administration is trying to gut
protections for iconic marine national monuments and open them to
industrial fishing, supposedly to boost the U.S. seafood
industry.

Except what keeps fish populations healthy and marine wildlife
habitat protected? Maintaining ocean protections.

NRDC’s legal team is considering all of our options to keep our
marine national monuments protected, including going to court. In
the meantime, the administration is seeking public comments on
its seafood policy until October 14 — and we need YOU to create a
groundswell of opposition against opening our shared waters to
commercial fishing.

Add your voice to help us keep marine
national monuments protected. Submit your comment right away. ( [link removed] )

CAMPAIGN UPDATE

NRDC to Investors: Dirty Energy in a
Marine Sanctuary is a Bad Bet

U.S. energy company Mexico Pacific’s
proposal to export climate-busting liquefied natural gas (LNG)
through Mexico’s irreplaceable Gulf of California would be
devastating for marine wildlife and the planet — but a new NRDC
analysis found that the $15 billion project is also a high-risk
gamble for investors’ wallets.

The report details how this dirty energy project would
saddle investors with stranded assets, destabilize communities,
and irreparably damage a World Heritage Site that is home to
nearly 40 percent of the world’s marine mammal species — while
emitting 5.7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide each year.

Mexico Pacific’s original seven-year
permit is expiring, and the company is asking the Department of
Energy for an extension of seven more years. Now is the time for
us to act.

Help show Mexico Pacific that we are
united in protecting the pristine Gulf of California from dirty
energy — and urge the company to reverse course. ( [link removed] )

LITIGATION UPDATE

Suing to Stop Toxic Spills from
Contaminating Our Waters and Communities

NRDC and other environmental
organizations sued the EPA for illegally refusing to issue
long-overdue rules to limit hazardous substances discharged into
our waterways. Across the United States, more than 100,000
facilities make, store, or use hundreds of hazardous chemicals
linked to reproductive, developmental, and neurological harm.

IMPACT

* More Than 100,000 NRDC Supporters
Submitted Public Comments Defending Lifesaving Clean Energy
Standards: ( [link removed] ) NRDC members and activists spoke out in opposition to a slew of
dangerous clean energy rollbacks proposed by the administration,
including rescinding the determination that climate change poses
a threat to health and welfare, removing all carbon pollution
standards for cars and trucks, and weakening or eliminating
limits on carbon and toxic air pollution from power plants. Read

* Challenge to the Latest Illegal Extension of J.H. Campbell Coal
Plant: ( [link removed] ) Public interest groups, including NRDC, challenged the
Department of Energy’s second illegal emergency order forcing the
aging, dirty coal-fired power plant in Michigan to continue
burning coal even though the electricity it produced is no longer
needed and already replaced by cleaner, cheaper sources we’ve
championed for years. Read more > ( [link removed] )

* High Seas Treaty Achieves 60 Ratifications, Marking a New Era
for the Ocean: ( [link removed] ) After decades of advocacy driven by NRDC and its partner
organizations, more than 60 countries have now ratified the High
Seas Treaty, the threshold for becoming international law. The
global treaty grants the international community the power for
the first time in history to comprehensively create marine
protected areas and strengthen management of destructive
industrial activities across almost two-thirds of the ocean that
lies beyond national borders. Read more > ( [link removed] )

LEGACY

Celebrating Robert Redford for 50 Years
of Service to the Environment ( [link removed] )

For decades, Robert Redford used his influence as a Hollywood
superstar to speak truth to power and advance environmental
progress. Read NRDC President Manish Bapna’s reflections on
Redford’s impact as an environmentalist and NRDC trustee for
nearly 50 years, from his tireless work defending the American
West to beating back destructive oil and gas drilling in iconic
wild places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Redford
passed away last month, but his legacy endures — both in all he’s
achieved and in the example he set by standing up for his belief
in leaving our children a livable world. Read more > ( [link removed] )

Unprecedented Congressional Attacks: ( [link removed] ) In another attempt to pave the way for corporations to get
