John,
In addition to the horrid attacks on our local communities and immigrant neighbors, senior Trump advisor Stephen Miller is once again attacking our rights. This time, through his right-wing, anti-democracy group America First Legal (AFL).
AFL has petitioned the Election Assistance Commission (EAC)―an independent, bipartisan commission tasked with helping Americans participate in the voting process―to require proof of citizenship when folks register to vote. In reality, non-citizen voting is virtually nonexistent, making this demand both unnecessary and harmful.
In 2024, the Georgia Secretary of State identified just 20 noncitizens who had registered to vote out of 8.2 million registrants.1 Earlier this year in Texas, 33 noncitizens were investigated for possibly voting in an election―that’s 33 out of 11.3 million voters.2 In 2016, the Brennan Center for Justice interviewed election officials in 42 jurisdictions across 12 states and found only 30 cases of suspected noncitizens voting out of 23.5 million votes—a rate of just 0.0001%.3 These numbers are far too low to justify adding new hurdles that would make registration harder for tens of millions of people.
This right-wing petition is a solution in search of a problem. Federal law already says that only citizens can vote in federal elections, and people must attest to being a citizen when they register to vote. The EAC is accepting public comments until October 20th. Speak out for voting rights and submit your public comment today.

This attack on voting rights is a part of a larger authoritarian power grab meant to silence dissent at the ballot box. Proof-of-citizenship requirements would negatively impact more than 21 million voters―especially married women and others who’ve changed their names, as well as young people, older voters, voters of color, Indigenous people, and low-income communities who are less likely to have passports or birth certificates with their current name on hand.4
It isn’t enough to send troops to occupy our cities, or fund a massive deportation machine; now, people close to Donald Trump are trying to carry out his voter suppression scheme after the courts already blocked it in April.5
This is another attack on our democracy that we cannot allow to stand. Submit your official comment now to stand up for democracy and defend our voting rights.
Thank you for all you do,
