Friend — Almost every day we see a new viral video of ICE agents hurting people, threatening people, and terrorizing entire communities.
Just this week we saw a video of an ICE agent throwing a distraught mother to the ground in an NYC courthouse. A journalist was slammed to the ground by an ICE agent and taken to the hospital in that same courthouse later in the week.
There was another video where an ICE agent in Maryland drops his gun during a violent arrest in the middle of a busy intersection, then picks up the gun and points it directly at bystanders who are watching from the sidelines.
On Thursday we learned that an entire team of ICE agents swarmed a Chicago apartment building with vans and helicopters and arrested every family who lived there until they proved their citizenship.
ICE is out of control and should be abolished.
Donald Trump has turned immigration enforcement into the kind of secret police we see in other far-right authoritarian societies. The Republican party’s constant dehumanizing rhetoric — along with the MAGA Supreme Court’s ruling which legalized racial profiling — has opened the floodgates of hatred and allowed for the violence we are seeing in our cities today.
And it should not be lost on us that as the Trump administration uses this shutdown as an excuse to fire federal workers en masse and defund critical federal programs, ICE is completely untouched by any budget cuts. Your health care, on the other hand, is on the chopping block.
That’s because mass deportation is this administration’s number one priority, and they don’t care how many people get hurt, terrorized, or even killed in the process. They don’t care about civil rights, civil liberties, or the very idea of freedom from tyranny.
ICE is out of control and should be abolished.
America has been a country of immigrants for hundreds of years, even before its founding. I’m one of them. ICE was created in 2003, just two decades ago. It’s abundantly clear that we can have a smart, humane, and organized immigration system without a group of violent thugs behind it.
