ON THIS DATE IN 1947 HARRY TRUMAN DELIVERED THE FIRST TELEVISED PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS…

Harry Truman delivered his first televised speech on October 5, 1947, addressing a global food crisis in the aftermath of World War II. As Europe faced famine, he urged Americans to conserve food—eat less meat and grain, avoid waste, and help feed starving populations abroad. The ten-minute address marked the first time a sitting U.S. president used television to speak directly to the nation.

Truman framed his appeal as both a humanitarian duty and a demonstration of American leadership in the early Cold War. Though only a few thousand households owned televisions, his calm, direct style set a precedent for future presidents, showing how the medium could shape public opinion and national purpose.
