John, The tidal wave of last-minute, mid-decade map manipulation is evidence of one thing: Our current system is in jeopardy. Right now, a concerted effort is underway to lock in Republicans’ hold on Congress by redrawing district lines, in order to avoid accountability by the voters. And it’s happening without the consent of the American people. The NDRC is fighting these mid-decade power grabs in states from Texas to Missouri to Ohio. But playing Whac-A-Mole with these attacks on democracy isn’t sustainable. We need a long-term solution to stop this from becoming a strategy Republicans trot out every election, changing the rules wherever they can to make sure they have the upper hand. That’s why the Redistricting Reform Act just introduced in Congress is so crucial. This bill ends the practice of partisan gerrymandering at the federal level — banning mid-decade redistricting schemes and requiring states to use truly independent commissions that will result in more competitive elections. Plain and simple, Americans deserve to hold their representatives accountable in fair and competitive elections. An overwhelming majority of voters oppose partisan gerrymandering, and it’s obvious why: It leaves all citizens worse off by disenfranchising them, sowing extreme division, undermining equal representation, and boosting the influence of powerful special interests. The Redistricting Reform Act is a critical step towards a new vision where the will of the people carries the day. It’s the long-term solution we need to put our country back on the path towards a fairer, stronger democracy, rather than leaving it in the hands of power-hungry politicians. Thank you, — Team NDRC
