Dear John,
We can all think of politicians who are good at talking-the-talk, but when the moment calls on them, they don’t walk-the-walk. Brad isn’t one of those politicians.
From the City Council to the streets, Brad consistently lives his values and stands up for the people of New York City.
I’ve been grateful to have Brad as a “partner-in-safety.” Back in 2013, he fought by my side to combat racist stop-and-frisk policies and pass the Community Safety Act. Over the past few weeks, we marched together night-after-night in defense of Black lives and protecting the rights of protestors.
Brad has lived his values by refusing to take campaign dollars from real estate developers and police unions. And he certainly lived his values this last week by voting NO on the unacceptable city budget that fails to divest from police and invest in communities.
We won’t just be celebrating a birthday on Wednesday. In true Brad Lander fashion, we’ll be taking the opportunity to speak to leaders from across the city and around the country about how we can reimagine and transform public safety, and how we can keep progressive momentum going strong.
I’d love to see you there,
Jumaane
