Dear John,

Clarence Thomas led the charge to overturn Roe v. Wade, gut the Voting Rights Act, flood America’s streets with guns, and give Donald Trump sweeping immunity from criminal prosecution.

Now it appears that Thomas is preparing to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, the decision legalizing marriage equality for same-sex couples.

The Supreme Court is reconsidering marriage equality as part of the new session that opens next week, and in a speech last Thursday, Thomas made it clear that he would not hesitate to overturn Obergefell and other past Supreme Court precedents that he called “totally stupid.”

This is probably a good time for me to remind you that Justice Thomas has taken over $4.75 million in gifts, luxury vacations, and other payouts from right-wing billionaires. What are the chances he can be trusted to rule against what they want?

Friends, let’s not mince words. Clarence Thomas is one of the most shamelessly corrupt Supreme Court justices that we’ve ever had. He must be impeached before he can do any further damage to our democracy.

In a speech at the Catholic University law school in Washington, D.C., last Thursday, Thomas made the stunning claim that he and the other justices have no obligation to follow past precedents of the Court, which he dismissed as “something somebody dreamt up and others went along with.”

And as a former law school classmate of Justice Thomas, I cannot overstate how lawless and dangerous this is.

Precedent is the heart and soul of Supreme Court jurisprudence. If the justices don’t think they have to abide by their own precedents from one case to the next, then the rule of law itself is effectively dead.

Even more troubling is that Thomas has taken so many gifts and payouts from right-wing billionaires — including flights on private jets, super-yacht trips, a luxury RV, and stays at 5-star resorts — that there’s simply no way he can be considered a fair and honest judge.

If there was ever a justice who has committed impeachable offenses, it’s Clarence Thomas, and last year, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced formal articles of impeachment against him. Now it’s time to turn up the heat and demand that the House of Representatives move forward with impeachment proceedings as soon as possible.
