Hi there,
I’ve been talking with many members of Congress, both Democrats and Republicans. I’m finding a lot of agreement. Most of us agree on two big things:
- We need to reopen the government.
- We need to do something about health care costs.
We disagree on timing. Democrats want to make it part of the plan to reopen the government. Republicans do not.
Extending the premium tax credits would help lower people’s health insurance costs, which will take effect on January 1, but people will see the increases on November 1st when they do open enrollment.
Again, many Democrats and Republicans agree this needs to be addressed—it’s a question of timing, not whether it should be done.
But it is also important to stand firm that the administration cannot use this shutdown to impose unilateral cuts that are against the rules. We saw this happen with DOGE, and now we’re seeing it again.
We should keep talking, keep working together, and focus on where we already agree: reopening the government and tackling rising health care costs.
My office will remain open throughout the shutdown to help constituents navigate this difficult time. I’ll continue to keep you updated.
