The pandemic has exacerbated the already elevated levels of food insecurity in our country. As a child, I experienced the struggles of food insecurity and no one should know the pain of hunger. Yet for many Americans that pain is reality.

Before the pandemic, over 37 million people in the U.S. didn't have enough food to eat. Since those early weeks, tens of millions have lost their jobs, been furloughed, or had their salaries cut. Now it is estimated that because of the virus more than 54 million people are experiencing food insecurity. People in our country, regardless of income, must be able to eat and we have the ability to feed every person in our nation.

We can and must eradicate hunger for all people in our nation. The U.S. Senate needs to act immediately to increase SNAP and child nutrition assistance benefits to support people and families struggling in the midst of the pandemic.
