Washington's New Sales Tax Onslaught Devastates Small Businesses
As a part of the largest tax increase in Washington's history, the sales tax just expanded across a whole new list of services provided by businesses. From website building to in-person hobby classes, small businesses across the state now have to bear the cost of an additional 6.5% (plus local add-ons up to 10.5%) tax, which inevitably is passed down to consumers. This new tax expansion creates a lose-lose-lose scenario, where consumers are charged higher costs, businesses get fewer customers, and the state gets less revenue as businesses close, leave, or never start to begin with. Short-sighted policies like these are why the Office of Financial Management issued a downward revision of $903 million for projected state revenue.
