Dear John,
Due to GOP inaction, our government is currently shut down.
Because Congressional Republicans are refusing to extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies, millions of Americans will be priced out of their health insurance, and thousands will be out of work until the government opens back up.
Make no mistake: The GOP, which already gutted Medicaid and kicked millions off their health coverage, has shut down the government because they want to raise your health care costs even higher. This shutdown is on them.
Since there is so much misinformation coming from the White House and the Republicans, I want to be clear about what is at stake.
In July, the GOP passed their Big Ugly law that made $1.5 trillion in cuts to our healthcare infrastructure, including Medicaid, the ACA, and even Medicare. In that same law, they gave trillions of dollars in permanent tax giveaways to the ultra-wealthy, while refusing to extend enhanced ACA premium tax credits that make health insurance affordable for millions of working families.
Now, they would rather shut down the government than extend these credits. If the credits expire, Trump and Republicans will cause millions of Americans to see their health insurance premiums skyrocket—including over 60,000 in my district alone. This change in funding could have an effect on hospitals and clinics, forcing them to close or reduce services making it more challenging for all of us to access care when we need it.
Trump knows that Americans can't afford another Republican cut to their healthcare, so he is lying about the stakes instead of working with Democrats. Because of his inaction, our government is shut down, and countless government services will be delayed.
I am standing strong with my Democratic colleagues to protect Americans’ access to healthcare, even when the GOP tries to bargain with people’s lives.
Due to the government shutdown, many services will be suspended or delayed. Learn more about how your services may be impacted by the Republican shutdown here.
