Dear friends and partners,
This week, nine months after fires devastated our community and destroyed three LAUSD campuses, we welcomed students back into the Palisades with the reopening of Marquez Charter Elementary Campus this week ([link removed]) . I was excited to commemorate this important milestone in the overall recovery of the Pacific Palisades community.
As some families return to surviving homes and others begin to rebuild, I'm proud that Los Angeles Unified School District has an option for kids to go to school near home. With input from the school community at each step, my office and District officials worked diligently and urgently to build the interim facility, and to reassure families through extensive and ongoing environmental testing ([link removed]) that Marquez is safe and ready.
And the rebuilding work continues. The Marquez campus will house the interim facility on the lower portion of the campus while the permanent reconstruction occurs up a hill. The Palisades Elementary campus, situated on a smaller lot with one large building intact, will undergo rapid reconstruction while its students remain at the Brentwood Science Magnet campus. At Palisades High, students are attending classes on the temporary “Pali South” Sears site in Santa Monica. The District has erected partial temporary facilities and is preparing the remaining classrooms for a safe return to the main campus this winter during ongoing reconstruction.
Nearby, strong leadership at Revere Middle School and Canyon Elementary continue to support families and staff impacted by the fires, including through special efforts like Revere’s free replacement of any damaged yearbooks. We are also grateful to the Brentwood Science Magnet and the Nora Sterry communities that have been gracious hosts in the aftermath of the fires.
That Marquez is operational less than a year after complete devastation is a testament to what we can do when government and community work together with urgency ([link removed]) for the benefit of children. I'm grateful to the long list of District officials, public agencies, and private partners who have been involved in this herculean effort to create stability for students. This extraordinary lift gives this community stability and hope.
As we continue to support all of our Board District 4 schools, I remain committed to ensuring continued urgency and focus on fire recovery for these traumatized communities and students in the Palisades.
Onward,
