Working For You During Democrats' Shutdown

On September 19, House Republicans passed a clean government funding bill, with zero partisan policies attached. This is the same bill Democrats championed and voted for 13 times under President Biden. But now that Trump is in office, they would rather shut down our government than vote along with Republicans to keep the lights on. It's clear they're prioritizing politics over their legislative duties.

Government shutdowns force our troops and law enforcement to risk their lives without pay, halt crucial veterans benefits and services, freeze SBA loans that keep small businesses alive, close our national parks and monuments, can cost taxpayers billions of dollars, and signal to our adversaries that democracy doesn't work. I urge Senate Democrats, who are holding up the funding bill, to reverse course and pass our legislation before more damage is done.

Until then, I want constituents to know that my office will remain fully open during the shutdown. As federal agencies experience delays, we stand ready to assist with any casework needs.

Justice and Answers for the Yogurt Shop Murders

The 1991 yogurt shop murders — a 34-year-old cold case in which four young girls were brutally killed — have grieved the Austin community for decades, but we never gave up hope that one day justice would prevail and the truth would come to light.

I’m so relieved that, this week, the suspect was finally identified, marking a major breakthrough in this horrific case.

These young girls’ families deserve closure. That’s exactly why I introduced and passed legislation to allow families like these to request a federal review of a loved one’s cold case. This case proves we should never stop fighting for the justice victims’ families deserve.

I also want to thank all of the law enforcement officers who worked tirelessly on this case to help provide answers for the families and the entire Austin community. While absolutely nothing can ever bring these four girls back, I hope this brings some peace to their families after all these years.

More Good News From the White House

This week, President Trump announced he is doubling the amount of funding for research into pediatric cancer using artificial intelligence, which could lead to historic breakthroughs. As the founder of the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus, I've long fought for these precious children to have a voice in Washington — and that's exactly what they're getting from President Trump's White House. This funding will ensure the U.S. produces the world's most innovative treatments — and eventually, cures — for this heartbreaking disease. As the president said, "We will defeat childhood cancer once and for all!"

Another Great Week in the District

I recently spent another great week traveling around central Texas and meeting with community members and leaders who are making a positive impact on Texas' 10th congressional district.

I presented a congressional record to one of my dear friends, Denice Harlan, who is retiring from serving as the President and CEO of the Giddings Chamber. Denice moved to Giddings, Texas, in 1983 with her beloved husband, Wade. She opened Harlan’s Restaurant in 1987 to provide delicious homestyle cooking, and her passion for service led her to join the Giddings Chamber of Commerce and serve as Chamber Director. She was recently recognized with the Giddings "Lifetime Achievement Award." I am grateful for Denice's leadership in Lee County, and I wish her all the best as she begins this new chapter in life.

I also honored longtime Brenham business leader Tieman H. “Skipper” Dippel Jr. for being given Texas Lyceum’s 2025 Stewardship of Texas Values Award for his lifetime commitment to bettering the Lone Star State. Skipper has chaired the Brenham National Bank for decades and helped establish many crucial organizations including the Texas Public Policy Foundation and the Texas Leadership Institute. It was my pleasure to present him a letter of recognition for his many years of dedication to making Texas stronger and better.

I was also glad to congratulate Kean Register on his retirement and his tenure as the longest-serving City Manager for the City of Bryan. His hard work over the past 25 years has made him an indispensable part of the community. Over the past two decades, the City of Bryan has seen a steady economic boost and return to fiscal soundness under his supervision. I am grateful for his leadership and was honored to join his family and friends in congratulating him for his decades of faithful service.

Lastly, it was my great pleasure to congratulate Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell on becoming the longest-tenured sheriff in Grimes County, with 27 years of service. His dedication to Grimes County knows no bounds, and I look forward to continuing to see him serve as a pillar of integrity and justice in Texas' 10th district. Thank you, Sheriff Sowell, for your work to protect our citizens and make Grimes County a safe and thriving community.
