Wisconsin's Republican Legislators Continue to Deliver Wins For Our State
Republican Legislators were able to deliver in a number of key areas for the State's 2025-2027 Budget. Thanks to their efforts, we have been able to rein in spending while defending Wisconsin values. The budget amendments pushed by Republicans reflect their commitment to fiscal responsibility and finding common sense solutions to ensure that government is able to work effectively for Wisconsinites.
Reining in Spending
Blocked $3.7 billion in proposed tax hikes, instead providing $1.5 billion in tax cuts for Wisconsinites over the next two yearsEliminated 300 vacant government jobs, resulting in 1,200 fewer jobs than Gov. Evers had proposed Continued the hiring freeze at UW while creating requirements ensuring that faculty spend more time teaching in the classroom
Defending Wisconsin Values
Prevented welfare expansion and kept drug-testing and work requirements for public assistance Blocked attacks on our Second Amendment rightsProtected school choice and increased funds for districts providing education to students under Open Enrollment
In addition to these wins in the State Budget, Republicans in the State Legislature continue to work for Wisconsinites with proposed bills aimed at improving housing affordability and protecting free speech on college campuses.
Housing Affordability
Republicans in the State Assembly have recently introduced Assembly Bill 454 [[link removed]] to create a Workforce Home Loan Program within the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA). This program would help first-time homebuyers to access up to $60,000 for a home loan at 0% interest, decreasing barriers to home ownership. The program would be funded by a section of the 2023 state budget that had appropriated funds for affordable housing. Rep. Jessie Rodriguez (R-Oak Creek) says that the bill will "help hardworking Wisconsinites who are striving to put down roots, raise families, and contribute to our local communities."
Free Speech Protections on College Campuses
Wisconsin Republicans have reintroduced a bill aimed at protecting free speech across our state's college campuses. The bill would go beyond current protections and allow students to sue UW System schools if their freedom of speech is violated. Rep. Amanda Nedweski (R-Pleasant Prairie) pointed out that, "With the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, we're hearing a lot more, particularly from college-age students, about the lack of viewpoint diversity on campuses." A UW System survey [[link removed]] in 2023 showed that more than two-thirds of Republican students have avoided expressing their views in the classroom. Most of those students did so either because they feared an instructor would lower their grade or dismiss their views as offensive.
