John,
”I’m not for censorship…but I do think that more has to be done online.”
That was Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar at last month’s POLITICO AI & Tech Summit,1 claiming she’s against censorship while calling for it in the same breath.
As the Trump administration attempts to silence left-coded organizations,2 Democrats like Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) are lining up to remove the protections that everyone relies on to exercise their rights to speak and organize online.3
At this same summit, Klobuchar advocated for the repeal of Section 230, a law that both left4 and right-aligned5 organizations agree is vital for protecting our First Amendment rights online. Section 230 protects online speech both from government censors and the rich and powerful who would otherwise use the threat of litigation to bully platforms into banning their critics.
At a moment like this, it’s unacceptable for Democratic lawmakers to call for abolishing vital protections for online free speech. Tell Senators like Amy Klobuchar to stand up for your rights instead of enabling censorship!
TAKE ACTION
Recently, Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) promised he’d force “tech platforms to mandate immediate ban for life of every post or commenter that belittled the assassination of Charlie Kirk.”6 Section 230 is what stands in the way of that happening. That’s the online future that Senator Klobuchar is saying she wants when she advocates repealing Section 230: one where anyone who doesn’t bow down to right-wing mouthpieces gets silenced forever.
Ironically, some Republicans are defending free speech more than Democrats on this issue. At the same summit where Klobuchar endorsed censorship, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) said that “The First Amendment absolutely protects speech. It absolutely protects hate speech. It protects vile speech. It protects horrible speech. What does that mean? It means you cannot be prosecuted for speech, even if it is evil and bigoted and wrong.”7 We don’t like to hand it to Ted Cruz, but in this case, he’s right. That makes it even more embarrassing that Democrats like Klobuchar are on the wrong side of history.
Whether their position stems from ignorance, malice, or greed for cheap political points, Democrats who are trying to throw away the First Amendment should be ashamed. Especially when multiple major figures on the right are willing to stand up for the free speech of leftists they vehemently disagree with. Will Democrats truly allow Senator Cruz be the champions for the left’s freedom of speech?
Let Democratic lawmakers know how you feel about their embrace of online censorship. Sign the petition to protect Section 230 and urge them to stop letting Republicans outflank them on free speech:
